Section 02 // The archive
A record of material realism
We do not source anonymous, industrially blended timber. Instead, our studio operates on a strict system of a permanent Archive and seasonal Lots.
The Archive serves as our permanent material library. It documents the native species we work with, recording their density, grain structure, and surface friction.
While this archive maintains a permanent record of our milling trials, individual releases represent finite harvests. Every Lot traces directly back to documented regional sawmills across Britain.

Archive 01: English Ash (F. excelsior)
Our choice of English Ash for Lot 01 is an intentional act of reclamation. Historically the 'workhorse' of the British woodland, Ash has been the primary choice for tool handles, a material that has spent centuries in the human hand.
English Ash possesses an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and an open-grain texture that invites physical handling. When two components meet, they produce a sharp, clear acoustic confirmation — the physical signature of dense timber.
Refined in our studio, the wood retains natural surface friction. This traction provides the equilibrium required for complex assemblies, enabling stable cantilever configurations without artificial coatings.
This varietal is celebrated for its tactile performance. When hand-finished, the grain takes on a suede-like texture, providing the superior friction required for intentional balance and daring cantilevers.
