The Archive

A record of material realism

We do not source anonymous, industrially blended timber. Instead, our studio operates on a strict system of a permanent Archive and seasonal Lots.

The Archive is our permanent botanical logbook. Each entry represents a single tree species (Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur, etc.). It documents specific wood character. The Archive numbers never change.

Lots are the living chapters within that library. They are finite, traceable harvests that tie every spatial element back to a specific regional landscape, a local sawmill, and a distinct moment in time.

Archive 01: English Ash (F. excelsior)

Our choice of English Ash for Lot 01 is an intentional act of reclamation. Historically the 'workhorse' of the British woodland, Ash was the primary choice for tool handles and musical instruments, a material that has spent centuries in the human hand.

Heritage & performance

English Ash is prized for its rhythmic resonance and structural elasticity. It possesses a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio and a natural resilience that invites constant handling. When two elements meet, they produce a sharp, clear 'clack'—a sensory signature of the timber's density and honesty.

This varietal is celebrated for its tactile performance. When hand-finished, the grain takes on a suede-like texture, providing the superior friction required for intentional balance and daring cantilevers.

As the species navigates the slow, generational shift of Ash Dieback, Archive 01 serves as a tactile tribute. By elevating this timber into a permanent medium for discovery, we ensure its character is cherished as it continues to define our landscape for generations to come.

We invite you to observe the life recorded in every element, from the pale clarity of the sapwood to the occasional depth of the olive heart. This is the physical record of the tree's history, preserved in a spatial alphabet.
