Milled & Found is a material-led studio based in Lancaster. We precision-mill elements for spatial thinking and material discovery – introducing a disciplined, physical counterweight to the digital day. Cut from traceable British hardwood lots, each element is scaled to ground the hand and focus the mind.

The Specialty Standard

Stewardship is our primary relationship with the timber. Rather than processing anonymous wood commodities, we apply a specialty standard to every harvest. By refining each traceable lot into a stable, realised form, we provide the timber with a second, articulated purpose – a permanent tactile presence for the human hand and the intentional workspace.

Our vision is an environment where every element is traceably linked back to its original landscape. Today, that journey begins by establishing direct partnerships with local British sawmills. This framework allows us to engage directly with regional tree surgeons and certified arboriculturalists, procuring local timber that has been patiently air-dried and kiln-seasoned over several years.

It represents the workshop equivalent of sourcing a single-origin harvest. We choose to intentionally move away from anonymous industrial supply chains and toward a localised system of seasonal, traceable lots.

Material Realism

We operate under a strict commitment to material realism. We reject the synthetic barrier of plasticised gloss coats, which mask and insulate the wood's inherent surface quality. Instead, every individual module is finished to reveal the intricate biological beauty and optical depth of the open grain without compromising its natural honesty.

This deliberate workshop finishing preserves the natural traction and texture of seasoned hardwood, protecting its raw tactile presence for intentional handling. Each element serves as an authentic, unvarnished bridge between the regional landscape and the quiet architecture of the physical interior.

Geometric precision and total material honesty have long defined the most enduring objects in design history. No British maker has built that standard in wood — not with traceable sourcing, not with documented lots, not with the transparency that turns an object into a record.
